Graine Mhaol Dragons Compete at Donegal Regatta

On Saturday, July 19th, the Graine Mhaol Dragons travelled north to take part in a fantastic day of racing at the Donegal Dragon Boat Regatta. Set against the stunning backdrop of Donegal’s waterways, the event brought together teams from across the country for a day of sport and fun, with 500 attendees.

Our crew put in a strong performance on the water and soaked up the warm welcome and lively atmosphere throughout the day. It was a brilliant opportunity to connect with other clubs, enjoy some friendly competition, and represent Mayo with pride.

Our club fielded a full regatta crew, securing a win in one race and placing second in another — a fantastic result on the day. In addition, two Graine Mhaol Dragons members joined a composite team made up of paddlers from various clubs, with Jerry Cowley joining the Bourne Dragons. Remarkably, the composite team took second place in one of their races — an impressive achievement considering it was their first time paddling together.

Overall our main crew improved their PB from the Athy regatta.  A big shout out to Adris and Audrey for leading the team into the competition.

A Night to Remember – Mayo Dragons Celebrate 10 Years

On Saturday, July 12th, Graine Mhaol Dragon Boat Club proudly marked its 10th anniversary with a fantastic celebration at Castlebar Tennis Club. The evening was filled with fun and plenty of nostalgia as past and present members gathered to toast a decade of paddling, camaraderie and community spirit.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne and his wife attended the evening and joined in the celebrations.

The event featured a Prosecco drinks reception, delicious food, a special club presentation, and lively music that kept the celebrations going. It was a wonderful chance to reconnect, reflect and celebrate how far the club has come — especially with this year marking the highest number of members in the club’s history.

We also took time earlier in the day to honour the occasion out on the water — and the weather was divine – great for taking photos.

A huge thank you to Frank Fullard for capturing both the evening’s festivities and the morning paddle. The photos will give us lasting memories of a very special day.

A huge thanks to the amazing organisers and Yvonne Kilcullen Events who helped make this celebration such a success — there are too many to name, but your hard work is appreciated.

Here’s to the next 10 years of dragon boating, friendships and milestones!

Mayo Dragons commission MCT First Aid Course

The Gráine Mhaol Dragon Boat Club would like to extend a big thank you to Michael Conlon of Michael Conlon Training, along with Chris and Mike, for delivering an excellent First Aid course on Saturday, 10th May at Castlebar Tennis Club.

The day-long training was both intensive and engaging, with participants gaining valuable, hands-on knowledge in a supportive and enjoyable learning environment. The course covered a wide range of scenarios and techniques, leaving our club members feeling far more confident and prepared to respond effectively in emergency situations—on and off the water.

We are proud to have invested in this essential training as part of our ongoing commitment to safety and teamwork.
